The assault on Guadalcanal by the 1st Marine Division, between August and October 1942. Both sides found it difficult to consolidate their early positions because neither had complete sea and air superiority. In the event, the Japanese launched their attacks on the US beachhead too early, thereby effectively squandering their strength.

The USA’s difficulties in consolidating and exploiting their position thus stemmed from their inability to attain complete sea control, and it created grave problems in supporting and reinforcing their troops. This allowed the Japanese to move additional forces to the island. As it turned out, control of the island’s airfield and the consequent ability of the USA to dominate the sea during the day all combined with Japanese errors and good defensive terrain to ensure that the USA gradually managed to build up a decisive edge in combat power.
